The objective of this course is to empower the person that has completed it successfully to apply knowledge and understanding of the criteria, rules and regulations pertaining to Certificates of Origin to certify and record Certificates of Origin and other documentary evidence of origin and deal with any queries relating to such documents.
After completion of the revised Unit Standard, the delegate will be able to:

• Explain the reasons for the certification of Certificates of Origin and other documentary evidence of origin;
• Scrutinise source documentation (supporting documentation);
•  Complete and certify certificates of origin and other documentary evidence of origin in conformity with the regulations, processes and procedures of
• Customs and competent authorities or bodies empowered to issue or certify documentary evidence of origin;
• Create and maintain records in conformity with the minimum requirements of Customs and competent authorities or bodies empowered to issue or certify documentary evidence of origin; and
• Deal with queries relating to the certification of Certificates of Origin and other documentary evidence of origin.

It should be noted that the requirements for certificates of origin and other documentary evidence of origin differ from free (preferential) trade agreement to free (preferential) trade agreement.  It will however be very difficult if not impossible to understand the rules of origin and customs certification requirements of specific free trade agreements without the knowledge acquired in this unit standard.

Chapters 8 and 9 of the Customs Duty Act, 2014 (Act No 30 of 2014) and the Rules thereto (currently “Draft” Rules to Chapters 8 and 9 of the Customs Duty Act, inter alia, provides for (a) Documentary evidence of origin for goods of South African origin exported from Republic as well as (b) Documentary evidence of origin for goods imported into Republic.
